In meinem Elternhaus waren die Wände voll mit Bildern zeitgenössischer Künstler und somit kenne ich das so von klein auf. Ich bin dann langsam erwachsen geworden in einer Zeit, die überschrieben war mit Willy Brandts „Wir wollen mehr Demokratie wagen“. Das war 1969 und ich war 16 Jahre alt. Im gleichen Jahr gab es in Köln als Reaktion auf den zwei Jahre zuvor erstmalig veranstalteten „Kölner Kunstmarkt“ den ersten „Neumarkt der Künste“. Ich war jeden Tag da und: begeistert von dem Gedanken, der über der kleinen Zeltstadt mitten in Köln schwebte, dass Kunst für alle da sein muss. Dieser Gedanke begleitet mich und bestimmt mein Handeln bis heute.
Vor einigen Jahren dann beschloss ich, mich ganz und gar einem einzigen und, wie ich finde, einzigartigen Kunstprojekt zu widmen. Einem „sozialen Netzwerk“ im Internet, wobei ich es lieber eine „globale soziale Skulptur“ nenne.
Es gibt sicherlich eine Reihe von Gründen, weshalb ich radikal abschloss, was ich rund 40 Jahre lang und durchaus nicht erfolglos künstlerisch gemacht hatte. Der Hauptgrund ist jedoch gewiss der Tod meiner Mutter, welchen ich als ganz dramatischen Einschnitt in mein Leben empfunden habe. Ich sah mich danach nicht mehr in der Lage, alles einfach so weiter zu betreiben wie zuvor. Und es war absolut klar, dass das Projekt von Anbeginn an meiner Mutter gewidmet sein würde. Dass sie die Anfänge des Projektes noch miterleben durfte und wusste, dass es ihr Projekt ist, machte und macht mich froh bei aller Trauer.
„love pro toto“ heißt es. Der Name ist angelehnt an das lateinische „pars pro toto“ (übersetzt: Ein Teil [steht] für das Ganze). Vor vielen Jahren hatte ich daraus „ars pro toto“ (Die Kunst [steht] für das Ganze) gemacht. Als ich nach einem Namen für das Projekt suchte, nach einer Internet-Adresse, und unbedingt „love“ enthalten sein sollte, ich zudem eine „.com“-Endung haben wollte, erwies sich das als geradezu unmögliche Vorgabe. Alle denkbaren „love“-Variationen waren vergeben. Erst der Gedanke, dass die Amerikaner kein Latein lernen, brachte die Lösung. „love pro toto“ war frei. So hatte das Kunstprojekt also seinen Namen. Es ist meiner Mutter gewidmet und: der Liebe. Aber das ist das Gleiche.
„love pro toto“ ist ein wunderbares Kunstprojekt im Internet. Alle Menschen können und sollen mitmachen. Ausnahmslos alle. Herkunft, Bildung, Angehörigkeit zu einer Religionsgemeinschaft, Alter, finanzielle Verhältnisse oder alles, was man sonst noch benennen könnte, bilden keinerlei Hemmnisse für eine Beteiligung. Es bedarf auch keiner Kenntnis aktueller Kunsttheorien. Es ist wirklich für alle da.
Eine einzige Bedingung, daran teilzunehmen, gibt es. Alle Teilnehmer müssen von sich ein kleines Video machen, in dem sie „Ich liebe dich“ (oder „I love you“, „Je t´aime“, „ti amo“ usw.) in ihrer Sprache und mit ihrem Ausdruck sagen und dieses Video als ihren Beitrag zu dem Projekt hochladen. Dabei ist dieses „Ich liebe dich“ natürlich nicht als intime Zusprache an einen bestimmten geliebten Menschen gedacht, sondern als Ausdruck einer humanistischen Grundhaltung an alle anderen Menschen gerichtet.
Im Gegensatz zu anderen „sozialen Netzwerken“ hat „love pro toto“ ein erklärtes Ziel.
Das Ziel ist es, eine Welt voller Liebe zu schaffen. Ja, das ist ambitioniert. Manche mögen sagen, das ist eine Utopie, ein Traum. Ich antworte: Ja, das ist ein Traum. Und zwar ein ganz alter, oft geträumter Traum aller Menschen. Ein Menschheitstraum. Aber wenn es doch ein solcher ist, warum wurde er noch nie verwirklicht? Wurde es überhaupt je versucht, ihn zu verwirklichen? Wurde vielleicht immer nur geträumt?
Wenn alle Menschen etwas wollen, dann muss es möglich sein, das zu erreichen. Ganz einfach, indem alle daran mitwirken, dabei helfen, dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Dabei muss jeder einzelne nur einen ganz kleinen, einen klitzkleinen Beitrag leisten. Zum Beispiel ein Video machen und „Ich liebe dich“ sagen. Um es dann bei „love pro toto“ hochzuladen und allen anderen Menschen zu zeigen: Ich will mitmachen und helfen bei der Verwirklichung eines schönen Traumes.

Das Projekt bietet Ihnen Stills aus Ihrem Video an (falls Ihnen aus den ersten drei Stills keines gefällt, können Sie mit Klick auf „recreate“ andere generieren lassen. Aus dem gewählten Still können Sie sich nun noch mit einer Maske ganz einfach einen Ausschnitt aussuchen. Fertig. Ihre „my love pro toto“-Seite erscheint. Klicken Sie auf Ihr Projekt-Bild. Sie können es sich herunterladen, wenn Sie wollen (und Sie sollten das auch) und dann ausdrucken und bei sich aufhängen. Sie bekommen damit sofort etwas aus der virtuellen Welt zurück in die wirkliche. Und wenn Sie später Freunde („Doppelherzen“) bei „love pro toto“ gefunden haben, können Sie sich deren Projekt-Bilder auch ausdrucken und so Schritt für Schritt, Bild für Bild, eine Galerie all Ihrer Lieben zu Hause haben. Ist das nicht schön? Ja, das ist schön.

VOLKER HILDEBRANDT – LOVE PRO TOTO
In my childhood home, the walls were full of paintings by contemporary arrists and so I have been used to this from a very early age. I was then growing up slowly in a time in which Willy Brandt’s, “We want to dare more democracy”, was of general importance. That was 1969 and I was 16 years old. In the same year in Cologne, the first “New Market of the Arts” was launched as a reaction to the “Art Market Cologne”, whichhad also been launched only two years before. I was there each single day and: I loved the idea that was kind of hovering above the tent camp, which claimed that art is for everyone. This thought has been with me and guided me until today.
Some years ago I decided to dedicate myself entirely to solely one and, I believe, really unique art project. A “social network” in the Internet – I prefer to call it “global social sculpture” actually.
There are probably several reasons why I radically terminated what I had been doing as an artist for 40 years and in spite of having been quite successful. The main reason, however, is my mother’s death, which I experienced as a dramatical change in my life. Afer that, I was not able anymore to simply continue as before. And it was very clear to me that I had to dedicate the project to my mother from the very beginning. Inspite of my grief, I felt and still feel happy that she could witness the beginnings of the project and that she knew it was dedicated to her.
The project is called „love pro toto”. The name is derived from the Latin „pars pro toto“ (translated: a part [stands] for the whole). Many years ago, I changed it into „ars pro toto“ (The art [stands] for the whole). When I was looking for an internet address that included the word “love” and ended in .com, I realized this was impossible. All possible “love” variations were already sold. Then I realized that people from the US don’t usually study Latin and I fond the solution: „love pro toto“ still available. So my art project got its name. It is dedicated to my mother and: to love. But this is the same.
„love pro toto“is an amazing art porject in the internet. All people can and are supposed to particpate. Origin, education, religious affiliation, age, financial resources, or you name it, do not restrict participation in any way. Neither do you need any special knowledge about contemporary art theory. The project is really for everyone.
The only requirement is that you must produce a short film of yourself in which you say, “I love you (or „Ich liebe dich“, „Je t´aime“, „ti amo“ etc.) in your own language and in your own way of saying it. Then you have to upload the film as your contribution to the project. Of course, “I love you” is not supposed to be meant as an affectionate message to somebody you actually love – but instead it is supposed to express a humanist attitude addressed to all people.
Unlike other “social networks”, “love pro toto” has a declared objective.
The objective is to create a world full of love. Yes, this is ambitious. Some of you might say that’s utopian, that’s a dream. I answer: Yes, It’ a dream. Actually, a very old and often dreamt dream of all people, of humankind. But then again, if that’s true, why has it never come true? Have we ever really tried to fulfill this dream? Maybe it has only been dreamt so far?
When all people have the same goal, then it must be poThis ssible to achieve it. is possible when everyone helps. Each individual only has to contribute only very little. For example, make a video and say, “I love you”. Then upload it on „love pro toto“ and showall other people: I want to be a part of it and help to fulfill a beautiful dream.
If you, dear reader, have read the above text, don’t hesitate but take prompt action. Make your short video with your camera or your mobile phone. Say, “I love you.” You can do this yourself or have someone else hold the camera. And later you can do the same for them. Your and your loves ones should all participate. Be a part of it.
It is really simple. Just visit www.loveprototo.com and click „j“ for „join“ (on your mobile phone you can find the button when you click the four bars on the top right). Enter your name and email address, choose a password and the language in which you have said, “I love you”. Send this information by clicking “admit”. You will then immediately receive an email that asks you to “activate” a link, by which you confirm that it was actually you who registered. After that you go back to „love pro toto“and can now upload your video. You will then be offered three optional stills for your profile. (In case you don’t like the three proposed stills, just create new ones by clicking “recreate”. You can further select only part of the still and enlarge it.) Done. Your „my love pro toto“-page is published. Click on your profile image. If you like (and you should like), you print it out now and hang it up at home. So you immediately get something in return from the virtual world. When you later make friends (“double hearts”) on „love pro toto“, you can also print out their images and so, step by step, image by image, have a gallery of all your loves ones at home eventually. Isn’t this beautiful? Yes, it is beautiful.
